About Lord's Wood
Walkers will get the most from it. The canopy's thick enough that it's brilliant on hot days, and there's something about Lancashire woodland that beats the Peak District crowds. Families with kids old enough to walk without complaining will be fine here - the terrain's manageable and there's room for them to burn off energy without you constantly calling them back.
There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and maybe a packed lunch. It's free to walk, as most woodland is, though parking arrangements aren't always obvious - you might need to ask locally in Croston. Spring's lovely here, when the bluebells are out, and autumn's solid too if the light's right.
If you're staying at Royal Umpire or any of the caravan parks nearby, Lord's Wood makes an easy morning or afternoon outing. It won't blow your mind, but it's genuine woodland and far less crowded than the tourist honeypots. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
