Lough Carn

A long, narrow body of water that cuts through moorland between Fermanagh and Omagh, Lough Carn sits quietly away from the tourist crush. It's the sort of lake that rewards patience rather than demands attention - you won't find much infrastructure here, which is rather the point.

The water itself is deep and dark, ringed by hills that shift colour depending on the light. On a clear day you get decent views across to the surrounding high ground. On a grey one - which is often - it feels properly moody. Most visitors come for the fishing (it's a decent brown trout spot) or to walk the shoreline, which offers a straightforward circuit if you're after a couple of hours on your feet without drama.

It's not a destination in itself, to be honest. But if you're based at Gortin Glen Glamping, just six miles away, it makes a solid morning's outing. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming after thirty minutes without water activities, though it's peaceful enough if you want to let them run about on the banks.

Omagh is the nearest proper town for supplies and eating, around twenty minutes' drive. The real draw of staying in this area is the forest work and hill walks - Lough Carn slots in as a quieter counterpoint to that. Free to visit, no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.
