Lower Alders

Lower Alders is a proper woodland walk just outside Henlow, the kind of place that rewards you with quiet and space when you need it most. You're moving through mixed woodland - mostly alder and oak - with a gentle stream running through that keeps things lush and alive even in drier months. The paths are well-trodden and manageable for families, though they can get muddy after rain so come prepared for that.

It's a solid choice if you're staying at Henlow Bridge Lakes and want to stretch your legs without driving anywhere. The walk takes about an hour at a relaxed pace, which is enough to feel like you've properly escaped without demanding a half-day commitment. The forest itself isn't dramatic - no viewpoints or dramatic clearings - but that's rather the point. It's the kind of place where you notice things: birds, the smell of wet earth, how the light filters through the canopy. Kids won't get bored if they're the exploring type, though they might lose interest if they need constant excitement.

There's a decent car park when you arrive, and the entrance is straightforward to find. Winter is when it's most atmospheric, with the bare trees opening up the woodland floor. Summer can feel a touch enclosed, though you'll have plenty of shade if you're walking in hot weather. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and snacks if you're making an afternoon of it.
