Lower Moor Nature Reserve

Lower Moor is a working wetland just outside Cirencester where you'll actually see what conservation looks like in action - not just a nature reserve in name only. The site manages water levels across marshy ground and open water, which means the birdwatching here is genuinely worthwhile, particularly in winter and spring when migrating species pass through. You'll spot lapwings, redshanks, and if you're lucky, the occasional rarer visitor.

It's a straightforward walk around the reserve on established paths. Nothing strenuous, nothing requiring special kit. Bring binoculars and decent boots because the ground gets waterlogged - that's rather the point of a wetland reserve. Most people allow two to three hours, though you can do a quick circuit in 45 minutes if time's tight.

Hit Lower Moor in the early morning when birds are most active, then head into Cirencester town itself for lunch.
