Lower Parting

Lower Parting is a working lock on the Gloucester Docks, where the River Severn meets the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. It's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - watching narrowboats rise and fall through the lock gates is genuinely hypnotic, especially if you time it right and catch a boat passing through.

There's not much else at the lock itself beyond a small pontoon area where you can stand and watch the mechanics of it all. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no faffing about. Just the water, the gates, and the occasional creak of hydraulics. It takes maybe twenty minutes to see properly, unless you're the type who enjoys watching boats for hours - which, honestly, some people do.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The Severn Way passes nearby, and it's a natural point to pause on a longer riverside ramble around Gloucester. Families with young children might find it interesting for ten minutes, but you'll likely need to move on unless your kids are properly obsessed with boats.

The real draw is its no-nonsense character. Lower Parting doesn't try to be anything other than what it is. Free to view, completely unfussy, and best visited on a clear day when the light catches the water properly. If you're staying at Apple Orchard Camping and Caravan Site just up the road, it's worth the short drive for an hour's exploration of the docks before heading back to your pitch.
