Lower Soles Wood

The woodland around Lower Soles, just inland from Dover, is proper walking territory - ancient beech and oak providing decent shelter even when the Kentish weather turns damp. You're looking at mixed woodland with good paths threading through, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think after the ferry port chaos.

It's a walker's wood rather than a destination in itself. Plan on an hour or two depending on how many wrong turns you fancy, though the trees aren't so dense that you'll actually get lost. Families with kids who can manage uneven ground will find it worthwhile - there's something about exploring woodland that keeps children entertained longer than you'd expect. The serious hikers passing through Dover should absolutely divert here before heading further into Kent.

The wood doesn't have the dramatic views of the North Downs, but that's rather the point. It's intimate, slightly overgrown in places, and feels genuinely tucked away despite being minutes from a major town. No facilities that I could find, so bring water and check the weather - muddy paths are guaranteed after rain.

If you're based at one of the nearby camping spots - Fallow Fields over near Sandwich is excellent and only five miles or so away - Lower Soles makes a solid morning ramble before heading to the coast. Pair it with a walk round the fields, grab lunch in Dover town, then explore the castle. The wood won't blow your mind, but it's a decent addition to a Kent walking break rather than something you'd drive hours to reach.
