Lower Wood NR

An ancient woodland just east of Newmarket where you can actually hear yourself think. Lower Wood is one of those reserves that rewards a slow morning rather than a rushed tick-off - the sort of place where you notice things only if you stop rushing.

The woodland itself is proper old, with mature oak and ash running through it. There's a network of paths that meander without fuss, and you'll spot bluebells in spring if the timing's right. The ground flora changes depending on which bit you're in, which keeps it interesting for anyone who actually cares about what grows where. It's quiet work, though - don't come expecting dramatic viewpoints or marked trails with interpretation boards at every turn.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts will get the most from it. Children will manage an hour or so, particularly if they're the sort to hunt for insects or spot birds rather than demand constant activity. Families staying at Piggles Retreat or HappenOak Treehouse would do worse than make it part of a day out - it's close enough for a mid-morning stroll without eating into the rest of your plans.

The reserve is managed by Wildlife BCN, so access should be free, though it's worth checking their website before you go as opening times aren't always listed prominently. Go early if you can. The light's better, you'll have the place mostly to yourself, and you're more likely to see wildlife before it retreats into the undergrowth.
