Loynton Moss

Loynton Moss sits just outside Stafford and is one of those reserves you stumble upon that genuinely rewards a quiet morning. It's a raised bog - which means the peat is higher than the surrounding land - and that changes everything about what grows there. Sphagnum mosses, sundews, the lot. The walking is gentle rather than challenging, with paths that let you move through without churning the ground to mud.

Wildlife watchers will find it proper worthwhile. The open water attracts dragonflies and damselflies in summer, and if you're lucky with timing you'll clock breeding birds. Photographers often camp here because the light across the bog in early morning is genuinely special. It's not a day-long destination - realistically you're looking at ninety minutes to two hours - but it slots perfectly into a wider Staffordshire park holiday. The reserve is free to access and operates on an open basis, though you should check ahead for any seasonal closures or work being done.
