It's the sort of place where you can actually breathe - old trees, open paths, nothing flashy or manicured. You'll find yourself walking under decent canopy cover, which matters on those warm days, and there are enough trails to keep you occupied for a couple of hours without feeling like you've walked the same route twice.

Families with younger children will get decent mileage here. It's not so vast that kids lose interest, but it's big enough to feel like a proper adventure rather than a quick stroll round the block. There are paths suitable for buggies if you're that way inclined, though muddy patches after rain are inevitable. Walkers after something low-key, without the crowds you'd hit at more famous spots, will appreciate the relative peace.

The woodland works well as part of a broader Buckinghamshire circuit. If you're staying at Bella Vista Camping or Home Farm Camping - both within easy reach - you could easily combine Lucas Wood with other local walks without overcomplicating your itinerary. Neither will blow your mind, but that's rather the point. It's decent countryside that actually feels like countryside.

No admission charge, as far as we can tell, and you can spend as long as you like wandering about. Go mid-week if possible; weekends pull in the local contingent.
