Lucy's wood

Dense Scots pine and Douglas fir create a proper canopy overhead in this working woodland just outside Penrith. Lucy's Wood feels more like a genuine forest than many of the manicured trails you'll find elsewhere in the Lakes - it's muddy, a bit wild, and exactly what you'd expect from a Cumbrian wood. The paths aren't waymarked, which either adds to the adventure or proves mildly irritating depending on your mood.

Families with older children who don't mind getting their boots dirty will love the sense of exploration here. Younger kids might find the lack of clear routes frustrating, and pushchair users should definitely look elsewhere. The wood connects to larger footpath networks, making it a solid choice for walkers wanting something more substantial than a gentle stroll.

It's free to wander through, though parking can be a bit hit and miss along the nearby lanes. Allow an hour for a decent explore, longer if you're planning to connect with the wider trail network. The wood works well as a morning adventure if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Ullswater Holiday Park and Threlkeld Hall Caravan Park are both within easy driving distance. Just don't expect facilities or a visitor centre - this is proper woodland rambling.
