Lyeland Wood

Walking into Lyeland Wood feels like stepping properly off the beaten track, even though you're only just outside Alresford. The woodland here is dense and genuinely quiet - no crowds, no gift shops, just tall trees and the occasional sound of a woodpecker if you're lucky.

It's a forest walk, straightforward as that. You get dappled shade, uneven paths that demand proper attention underfoot, and the kind of peace you forget exists near towns. The woods are mixed - oak, beech, and conifers - which means the light changes as you move through different sections. Early morning is best if you want to spot wildlife; afternoon light filters through beautifully for photography.

This is ideal for walkers who want a proper stretch without the formality of marked trails or visitor centres. Children will manage it fine if they're the type to explore rather than be entertained, though there's nothing here to keep restless kids occupied for more than an hour. History types won't find much - it's just woodland, no ruins or stories attached.

No admission charge as far as you can tell - locals treat it as an open woodland. Allow an hour minimum for a basic walk; two hours if you're the sort to wander properly and spot things. If you're camping at Woodlands just down the road or staying at Hampshire Hills nearby, this makes a cracking morning sortie before breakfast. It's the kind of place that justifies being in the area, rather than being worth a special trip on its own.
