Machrie Moor Stone Circle 4

You'll find yourself on open moorland on the Isle of Arran, standing among six towering stones that have been here for around 4,500 years. Machrie Moor Stone Circle 4 isn't the most dramatic megalithic site in Scotland, but there's something rather moving about the isolation of it. The stones stand weathered and worn, some leaning at angles that suggest the landscape itself has been shifting beneath them for millennia.

It's the kind of place that rewards a proper visit rather than a quick snap. Walkers and history types will get the most from it - you need to be prepared for a muddy walk across moorland and don't expect facilities or visitor centres. The walk out there is part of the appeal, honestly. On a clear day the views across Arran are decent, and you'll likely have the stones to yourself.

There's no admission fee and no opening hours to worry about. Allow a couple of hours including the walk, depending on your pace and how long you want to linger. Visit in dry weather if possible; the moorland turns into a bog after heavy rain. If you're staying at Kings Caves Glamping just up the road, this makes an excellent morning walk before heading back for lunch. It won't captivate young children for long, but for adults with an interest in Bronze Age monuments, it's worth the detour.
