Madge Hobbs Wood

Ancient woodland east of Saffron Walden, Madge Hobbs Wood offers proper peace if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites. The paths wind through mature trees - oak and beech mostly - and it's the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong rather than your own footsteps echoing back at you. Not vast, but intimate enough that half an hour feels like proper escape.

It's ideal for anyone wanting a quick woodland walk without the commitment of a full nature reserve expedition. Kids won't complain if you keep it short, though they'll run out of entertainment after an hour. History buffs might find the ancient woodland designation interesting - these trees have been here for centuries, which does something to you when you stop and think about it.

The walk itself is gentle, more amble than hike, which makes it a solid choice for the older crowd or anyone wanting to stretch their legs between glamping activities. Spring is when it comes alive properly - bluebells and birdsong - but it's never less than pleasant. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. The local Saffron Walden area has everything else you'd need - proper medieval market town stuff - but Madge Hobbs itself is genuinely about the trees and the quiet.
