Maer Low Cliff beach

The cliffs here tower above a stretch of sand that doesn't get nearly the footfall of Bude's main beach, which sits just down the coast. Low tide reveals proper rockpools and enough sand to actually spread out without tripping over someone's beach umbrella. The walk down isn't gentle - it's steep enough that you'll feel it on the way back up, especially if you've got little ones in tow.

This is the kind of place walkers stumble upon rather than plan for. The coastal path runs right past, so it works well as a leg-stretcher if you're doing the longer Bude coastal route. Families with younger children might find the beach access a bit much, but older kids and teenagers will appreciate having space to actually do something rather than just sit. The rockpools are decent at low tide - proper exploration territory if the kids are into that sort of thing.

Stay nearby at Wooda Farm Holiday Park and you're within easy driving distance, or Atlantic Surf Pods if you want to stay closer to the action. Parking can be tight, so arrive early in summer. The beach is free and there are no listed opening hours - which is exactly how it should be. Allow a couple of hours if you're combining it with a coastal walk, or just an hour if you're popping down for a paddle and a rummage in the rocks. Go on a weekday in shoulder season and you might have the place almost to yourself.
