Maidford Clump

You won't find much fanfare about this modest woodland patch near Malmesbury, and that's rather the point. Maidford Clump is a small forest - the sort of place where you can genuinely lose an hour wandering between the trees without encountering another soul, which frankly feels rarer than it should be these days.

It's decent walking territory, particularly if you're based at Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park or the glamping setups at Whychurch Farm nearby. Nothing steep, nothing demanding - just proper woodland with the kind of paths that meander rather than march you from A to B. The canopy does its job in all weathers, which matters when you're camping in the Cotswold fringe.

Walkers will appreciate it more than most. History enthusiasts won't find much to chew on here - it's not one of those ancient forests with a story attached to every oak. Families with very young children will manage fine, though there's not really a "destination" feel that keeps kids engaged if they're after something specific to do rather than just walk about.

The nearest real town, Malmesbury, sits a few miles south and offers better facilities and more tourist infrastructure. This is the kind of place you visit because you're already in the area staying at one of the local parks, not because you're planning a pilgrimage. That doesn't make it worthless - it just makes it what it is. A local wood doing what local woods do best: providing a decent hour's walk without pretension.
