Manduvessedum Roman Station

The Romans left their mark all over Britain, but Manduvessedum - a proper military station that once guarded the Watling Street - is one of those archaeological spots you'll have mostly to yourself. It's near Atherstone in Leicestershire, tucked into landscape that hasn't changed all that much since the legions marched through two thousand years ago.

What you get here is the earthworks and foundations of a fort that served as a crucial supply and communication hub. It's not marble temples or intact buildings - this is the kind of archaeology that requires some imagination. The site gives up its secrets slowly: you can trace where the ramparts ran, spot the ditches that once kept enemies at bay, understand how the Romans imposed order on this corner of their empire. Walkers will appreciate the terrain; history types will spend a good hour piecing together how the garrison lived and worked.

Allow an hour for a proper explore, though you could breeze through in thirty minutes if you're just passing. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared for open ground. The site is free to access - it's an open archaeological landscape rather than a managed attraction.

If you're basing yourselves at one of the caravan parks near Atherstone - Atherstone Stables or Lime Tree are closest - this makes an honest morning's work before heading somewhere with more visitor infrastructure. Bosworth Lakeside Lodges, five miles south, gives you a different angle on the area. Not spectacular in the Instagram sense, but genuinely interesting if you care about what came before.
