Many Lochs

The Far North lochs around Thurso aren't the postcard-famous waters you'll find further south. Instead, you get something better - genuine solitude and the kind of light that makes you understand why people move to the Highlands and never leave. There are several lochs dotted across this landscape, each with its own character, though Many Loch itself sits as one of the more accessible options for casual visitors.

You're looking at freshwater lochs surrounded by moorland rather than dramatic mountain backdrops, which sounds less impressive until you're actually standing there on a clear day with barely another soul in sight. The walking is straightforward, nothing too technical, and the light quality - especially in summer - is extraordinary. Local anglers know this area well for trout, but if you're just after a walk and a bit of space to think, it works brilliantly.

If you're based at Little Croft Highlands nearby, these lochs are worth exploring on an afternoon when the weather's cooperating. Allow a couple of hours for a decent loop walk depending on which loch takes your fancy. The real appeal here is the absence of crowds rather than dramatic scenery - it's the kind of place that gets under your skin precisely because it doesn't try too hard. Bring decent boots and waterproof layers. The north coast weather changes quickly, and you want to be comfortable when you're properly remote.

Best visited in late spring through early autumn, though the midges can be fierce in July and August if you're sensitive.
