Marden Super Henge

Three massive earthen banks converge on a strip of land near Devizes, and you're looking at what was once Britain's largest henge. Marden Super Henge isn't as famous as Stonehenge or Avebury, which actually works in its favour - you won't be fighting crowds to get a decent view. The site sprawls across open countryside, and the best way to appreciate its scale is to walk the perimeter. The banks themselves rise maybe four or five metres high, enough to give you a sense of the monumental effort that went into building this around 2500 BC. No stones, no visitor centre, no café. Just you, the landscape, and the knowledge that this was genuinely massive in the Neolithic era. For history obsessives and archaeology students, it's compelling precisely because you have to use your imagination a bit. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming - there's no climbing allowed and it takes maybe forty minutes to get the measure of it. Walkers, though, will appreciate the open countryside around it. The nearest proper village is Devizes, about three miles away, which keeps things quiet. If you're camping nearby at Little Owls Camping or Honey Bee Glamping, it's an easy half-hour drive to explore this bit of Neolithic heritage. Admission is free. Go on a clear day when you can actually see the banks properly - rainy weather flattens everything visually.
