Mark Grove

Mark Grove sits just outside Southminster as a proper Essex woodland - the sort of place that rewards a decent walk without demanding mountaineering boots or a postcode in the Lake District. It's genuinely quiet, which in itself feels like a win when you're staying in the area. The trees are mature, paths wind through at a reasonable pace, and there's enough space to actually get away from the car park crowd if you time it right.

This works best for walkers who want something low-key - families with younger kids will get a solid hour out of it, though teenagers might find it a touch dull. Local history enthusiasts will appreciate that Essex has proper woods with actual character, even if they're not the Cotswolds. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.

Free to access and worth combining with a stay at either Eastland Meadows or Steeple Bay if you're after a woodland stroll that doesn't require planning permission. The beauty of Mark Grove is it fits into a morning nicely without becoming the entire day. Early morning visits are best - less chance of bumping into dog walkers every thirty seconds. Allow an hour for a proper loop, ninety minutes if you're taking photographs. December through March is lovely when the undergrowth dies back and you can actually see into the woodland properly.
