Markly Wood

Markly Wood is a proper Sussex forest that offers a decent woodland walk if you're staying in the Heathfield area. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no themed attractions, no gift shops, just trees and the occasional path. The woodland itself is typical of the Weald: mixed deciduous, a bit boggy underfoot after rain, and genuinely quiet even on weekends.

You'll get the most out of it if you're after a straightforward forest ramble rather than dramatic views or ancient monuments. Dog walkers love it, families with primary-school kids will have a fine hour here, and anyone needing to clear their head will find it does the job. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how lost you want to get.

It works well as a break if you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Horam Manor Country Park and Dernwood Farm Glamping are both within four miles, which makes it handy for a morning walk before striking camp. The forest is free to access, though parking might be tight at peak times. No facilities I could find, so take water.

Honestly, it's not a destination in itself. But if you're based locally for a holiday and the weather's fine, it's a solid way to spend a couple of hours. Go on a weekday if you can - it'll feel even more like you've wandered away from everything.
