Marylands Wood

Ancient oak and hornbeam line the paths through Marylands Wood, a proper Essex woodland that feels a world away from the suburban sprawl of Benfleet. This isn't a manicured visitor attraction - it's a working forest where you'll find yourself on narrow trails with natural surfaces, the kind of place where you actually notice the seasons changing.

The wood works brilliantly for families with decent walkers. Kids will enjoy spotting wildlife in the undergrowth, and there's enough space to let them loose without worrying about crowds. It's also worth a visit if you're into woodland ecology - the mix of tree species means something's always happening, whether that's bluebells in spring or fungi in autumn.

Allow a couple of hours for a comfortable loop. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with water and snacks. Free access, thankfully.

If you're based at Essex Glamping or Riverside Village Holiday Park nearby, Marylands Wood makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion without needing to venture far. It pairs well with time at other local green spaces - you won't feel like you've driven hours just to see some trees. The woodland isn't dramatic or particularly famous, but that's rather the point. It's genuine Essex woodland, not engineered for Instagram. Real value if you appreciate a proper walk without the theme park atmosphere.
