Matchams Viewpoint

The view from Matchams really does stop you in your tracks. It's one of those rare spots in Dorset where you can actually see properly across the landscape without trees mucking it up, and on a clear day the sight lines stretch for miles. You're looking out over open heathland that rolls towards the New Forest, with enough elevation to make it feel properly commanding rather than just another field viewpoint.

This is straightforward stuff - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no entrance fee. You turn up, you look, you either stay five minutes or linger for twenty if the light's doing something interesting. It works best in late afternoon when the sun hits the heath at an angle and brings out the texture. Morning's fine too, but there's less drama to it.

Walkers pass through regularly since it sits along decent footpath routes out of Ringwood, and families with young kids will find it a decent stopping point on a circular walk rather than a destination in itself. The real value is what it adds to a longer day out - pair it with a proper explore through New Forest Centenary Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite territory or Ashley Heath Caravan Park's area, and you've got something. On its own? It's five minutes well spent if you're in the neighbourhood, not worth planning a special trip for.

The heathland changes with the seasons, purple in late summer if the heather's done well, more muted in winter. Go when you're already walking the area rather than making it your main event.
