Medieval Village of Riplingham

The earthworks scattered across this East Yorkshire field are what's left of a medieval settlement that vanished centuries ago. You won't find much in the way of standing structures - this is archaeology rather than architecture - but if you're the type who enjoys reading the landscape, Riplingham tells a proper story. The bumps and hollows in the grass mark where houses once stood, where streets ran, where people lived ordinary lives before the village simply ceased to exist sometime in the medieval period.

Walking the site near Brough, you need to use your imagination a bit. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the land itself and whatever story you can piece together from the layout. That said, it's genuinely interesting if you're into how English villages changed and moved over time - this place was abandoned wholesale, which happened more often than most people realise. It's free to visit and takes about an hour if you're keen, less if you're just passing through.

Families might find it a bit abstract for young kids - there's nothing to climb on or touch - but older children interested in history could get something from it, especially if you explain what they're looking at. It works well as part of a wider ramble around the Wolds. The nearby caravan sites at Willow Pond and Little Wold Away make decent bases if you're exploring this quieter corner of East Yorkshire. Best visited in winter or early spring when the grass is shorter and the earthworks show more clearly.
