Meikle Culcaigrie Hill

The view from Meikle Culcaigrie Hill properly rewards the effort of getting up there. It's a modest climb by Scottish standards - nothing that'll have you gasping - but the Dumfries & Galloway landscape that unfolds across the summit is genuinely worth the legs. On a clear day you can see right across the Lowlands, all rolling green and moorland stretching to the horizon.

This is walker territory first and foremost. The kind of place where you'll spend two to three hours without ever feeling rushed, which suits a campsite holiday perfectly. Kirkcudbright, the nearest town, is a proper artist's haunt with good cafes and galleries if you fancy a detour on the way. Families with teenagers who can manage uneven ground will find it manageable, though younger kids might lose interest before the summit.

Going early avoids the midweek crowds - though to be honest there aren't really crowds here anyway. The hill sits handily close to both Silver Craigs Campsite and Seaward Holiday Park, making it an ideal afternoon outing if you're based nearby. You'll want decent boots given the Scottish terrain can be bog-prone in winter, but summer visits are far more pleasant underfoot.

Free to walk, naturally. No facilities at the top, so pack water and something to eat. The real draw is the solitude and the views - if you're chasing that alone, this delivers. If you want a cafe at the summit, keep walking.
