Meon Hill

The walk up Meon Hill, just outside Stratford-upon-Avon, takes about forty minutes if you're not dawdling. It's a proper climb - steep in places - but the payoff is worth the effort. From the top you get views across the Cotswolds that stretch for miles, the kind of panorama that makes you understand why people settle in this corner of England.

What makes Meon Hill special isn't any particular structure or monument. It's the walk itself and what you see once you've got your breath back. Access is free - it's open country - and you can start from the village below. Allow two hours return if you want to sit at the top and take it in properly. The best light is late afternoon, when the Cotswold stone seems to glow. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Ranch Caravan Park or Campden Yurts are closest - this makes an excellent half-day outing that breaks up the holiday nicely. Pair it with a visit to Stratford's Shakespeare connections if you want culture alongside countryside. It's not complicated, not fashionable, but it does exactly what a good country walk should do.
