Merestone Park

The moment you step into Merestone Park, you're in proper countryside - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. This nature reserve near Rugby sprawls across land that's been left to do its own thing, and it shows. Woodland trails wind through mature trees, open grassland hosts wildflowers depending on season, and if you're lucky you'll spot the birds and small mammals that call it home.

It's the kind of spot where walkers and nature enthusiasts will spend a good couple of hours without noticing the time slip away. Kids might find it less thrilling than a managed adventure park, but if yours are into bug-hunting or tree-climbing, they'll get on fine. The reserve works brilliantly as a half-day detour if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Holt Farm Campsite is just under three miles away, making it an easy outing.

Bring binoculars if you've got them and wear proper boots if there's been rain; parts can get boggy. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so plan accordingly. The real value here is the quiet - a genuine break from the usual attractions rather than a major draw in its own right.
