Metlands Wood

The woods around Dorchester aren't dramatic, but Metlands Wood rewards a proper wander if you're staying nearby. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - mature beech and oak overhead, the ground soft with leaf litter, paths that go somewhere without feeling like they've been beaten to death by tourist boots.

Walking here takes you away from the town buzz in minutes. The woodland opens up enough that you're not fighting through dense scrub, but closes in just enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. Most visits run two to three hours depending on pace and how many times you stop to examine moss on fallen logs. It's genuinely decent for families with older kids who can manage uneven terrain without constant complaint, though buggies are a non-starter.

The wood sits well within striking distance of Green Valley Yurts and Cabin three miles away, making it a natural half-day activity if you're glamping in the area. Early morning is when you'll have it mostly to yourself - late morning onwards brings dog walkers and the occasional group from town. No facilities to speak of, no admission to pay as far as anyone can tell, just proper woodland walking.

It's not going to replace a trip to somewhere showier, but if Dorchester is your base and you want a genuine woodland escape that doesn't require a car journey, this does the job. Worth an afternoon, not worth planning a trip around.
