Mevagissey Aquarium

The aquarium sits right in Mevagissey itself, which is handy if you're based at Pentewan Sands or Tregarton Park just down the road. It's a modest setup - not the sprawling affair you'd find in Plymouth or further afield - but it does what it says on the tin. Local fish and marine life, mostly species you'd actually spot in Cornish waters if you were patient enough to peer into rock pools.

You'll spend somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour here, depending on how much you read the information boards and whether the kids want to stand and stare at the eels for twenty minutes. The tanks are well-maintained, and there's a decent spread of seahorses, cuttlefish, and various rockpool residents. It's the kind of place that works best on a drizzly afternoon when the beach is a non-starter.

Families with younger children will find it worthwhile, particularly if they're the type who ask endless questions about what lives in the sea. Older kids might find it a bit small to hold their attention for long. The real strength here is that it's local and unapologetically specific - you're learning about actual Cornish marine life, not getting a global aquatic tour.

It's a short stroll from the harbour and the working fishing boats, which adds genuine context to what you're looking at. Combine it with a walk around the village or a fish and chip lunch, and you've got a perfectly reasonable half-day out. Worth the visit if you're staying nearby, though don't expect it to be a full day's entertainment.
