Middle Coppice

Walking into Middle Coppice on a grey Shropshire afternoon, you're immediately struck by how dense it feels - proper woodland, the kind where you lose sight of the car park within minutes. It's a working forest, which means the paths are well-maintained but you're never far from evidence of timber management. The coppice itself is a mix of mature woodland and regrowth, with plenty of native broadleaves that shift colour dramatically across the seasons.

There's no visitor centre or café here - this isn't that sort of place. What you get instead is straightforward woodland walking, the kind that appeals to people who actually want to walk rather than photograph themselves walking. Dog walkers absolutely love it. So do families with older kids who won't complain about lack of facilities. For serious hikers planning a few hours outdoors, it slots nicely into a wider exploration of the area near Stafford.

The real value comes if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Fledgling Farm is only four miles away, or Westcott Woods Glamping if you want something with a bit more polish. Either way, Middle Coppice works as a morning or afternoon excursion without needing to drive far. Spring is probably the best time, when the woodland floor comes alive, though autumn's decent too if you don't mind the mud.
