Whorlton Pods, four miles out, and Hillside Caravan Park at five miles give you solid bases too. None of them are far enough to make it a hassle.

Allow two hours there and back if you're dawdling and taking photos. Early morning is your best bet for avoiding the light getting flat. The summit itself is bald and windswept - not a sheltered spot for a picnic, so eat before you go up or bring windproof wrapping for your sandwiches.
