Mill Hill

Mill Hill sits just outside Newark, a modest rise that doesn't announce itself much but rewards a short walk. You're looking at roughly 300 metres of elevation - nothing that'll exhaust you, but enough to give decent views across Nottinghamshire's rolling countryside when the weather cooperates.

The appeal here is straightforward. It's a proper walker's spot rather than a destination attraction. You get open countryside, a chance to stretch your legs, and on clear days the surrounding landscape opens up nicely. The peak itself is unremarkable - no café, no visitor centre, no facilities - but that's rather the point. This is about the walk and the views, not the infrastructure.

Families with decent-legged children will find it manageable. Young kids or those after an easy stroll might find the gradient a bit much. History types won't get much from it, though the proximity to Newark's medieval castle means you could easily combine this with a proper historical visit to town.

It works well as a break in a park holiday around Sherwood Forest. Center Parcs and Sherwood Forest Holiday Park are both within striking distance - 2.5 to 5 miles respectively - so you could slot a couple of hours here between park activities without going too far. Brings a bit of proper walking to what might otherwise be a fairly manicured break.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling. Go when it's clear - a misty day here isn't worth the bother. Free to access, naturally, since there's nothing commercial about it.
