Millennium Beacon

The Millennium Beacon sits on high ground near Oxford, offering proper views across the Oxfordshire countryside. It's the sort of place you'd climb to on a clear day and suddenly realise why locals swear by it - the vista opens up and you can see for miles in all directions.

What you're actually doing is a straightforward walk to a marked viewpoint. The beacon itself is modest - don't expect anything elaborate - but the real payoff is the panorama. On good weather days, the walk's rewarding enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might flag before the summit if it's a steep approach. Walkers will appreciate it as a quick leg-stretch between longer hikes, not a destination in itself.

Timing-wise, allow 30-45 minutes depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of. This is an unadorned spot - which some find refreshing, others underwhelming.

If you're camped at Valley Farm Campsite or Bablock Hythe Caravan Park, both within a couple of miles, the Beacon makes a decent morning or early-evening outing. The proximity to Oxford means you could easily combine it with a day exploring the city's colleges and riverside walks. It works best as an add-on rather than a reason to visit Oxfordshire in itself, but if you're in the area, it's worth the climb for the views.
