You'll find Millennium Wood just outside Othery in Somerset, a proper woodland walk that feels genuinely local rather than tourist-trap. It's the sort of place where you can actually breathe - mature trees, quiet paths, and the kind of stillness that makes you remember why people bother with the countryside at all.

The wood itself is straightforward: a mix of established woodland with good access, decent for a two-hour ramble without needing serious hiking boots. Bring kids and they'll find it engaging enough - there's space to explore, trees to clamber around, and no crowds demanding your attention every five minutes. The ground can get boggy after rain, so waterproofs aren't optional in winter.

It's free to access (or at least, there's no gate or admission charge), which makes it brilliant for a spontaneous afternoon when you can't face paying entry fees. Allow an hour minimum if you're just having a gentle potter, longer if you've got walkers who actually want to cover some distance.

The location makes sense for a woodland break while staying at one of the nearby parks - Thornhills is barely three miles away, and from there you're well-positioned for the broader Somerset Levels.
