Milton Community Woodland

The woodland paths at Milton wind through mixed forest just outside Inverness, offering a proper escape from the town without needing to drive far. It's straightforward stuff - walking trails through native trees, decent for stretching your legs if you're staying in the area and fancy something low-key. You won't find dramatic viewpoints or rare wildlife spotting opportunities, but the trails are pleasant enough for families who want a couple of hours among the trees rather than a full day's expedition.

The real draw here is proximity. If you're based at Delny Glamping or Newmore Highland Pods - both excellent options within five minutes' drive - Milton fills an afternoon gap nicely. Kids will manage the walking without complaint, and there's enough ground to explore that they won't get bored after twenty minutes. Bring waterproofs regardless of the forecast; Highland woodland stays damp.

Go during late spring or early autumn when the path conditions are best and the midges are lighter. Summer can be boggy in sections. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so sort yourself out in Inverness beforehand. The woodland isn't a destination in itself - it won't make your trip - but it's the sort of place that justifies a quiet morning or late afternoon when you're already in the Highlands and want to get outside without faffing about. Worth twenty minutes from your accommodation, perhaps not worth planning your day around.
