Minehead Museum

The museum sits bang in the middle of Minehead, a small Victorian seaside town that's seen better days but still has plenty of charm. Inside, you'll find the sort of collection you'd expect from a local heritage museum - bits of Roman pottery, Victorian photographs of the seafront, maritime displays, and odds and ends from the town's past as a working port and later a holiday destination.

It's free to get in, which is the main thing going for it if you're honest. You can get round in forty minutes, maybe an hour if you're genuinely interested in local history. The displays aren't flashy, but they're honest enough - there's real effort gone into explaining how Minehead changed over the centuries, from a fishing village to a resort town.

Worth a wet afternoon when you're staying at Butlins or one of the caravan parks nearby, but don't make a special journey from outside the area. Families with younger kids might find it a bit dry - there's not much hands-on stuff. History enthusiasts will get more from it, particularly anyone curious about Somerset's coastal trade and Victorian seaside culture.

The location works well as part of a broader Minehead morning - the seafront, the harbour, and the museum cover the main points of interest in town. Nothing earth-shattering, but solid local stuff that fills a couple of hours on a drizzly day.
