Mirebank Wood

The woodland around Mirebank doesn't announce itself loudly - you'll find it on the outskirts of Carlisle, a proper slice of northern forest where you can actually hear yourself think. The woods don't require advance planning or payment hassles, which is refreshing. Bring a decent packed lunch and settle on a spot overlooking the quieter corners. In autumn the light through the canopy turns particular shades of gold that make you understand why people take photographs, and winter walking reveals the structure of the place in ways you miss when everything's leafed out.
