Moel Ddu

Standing at 1,148 feet above Beddgelert, this rocky outcrop delivers proper mountain views without the slog of a major peak. The path winds up through bracken and heather, offering glimpses of Snowdon's eastern flanks as you climb. It's a solid two-hour round trip from the village, with the final approach requiring a bit of scrambling over loose slate - nothing too taxing, but definitely one for walkers with decent boots.

Families with older children will find this a cracking introduction to Welsh mountain walking. The summit gives you sweeping views across the Glaslyn valley, with Llyn Dinas shimmering below and the railway line snaking through the forest. On clear days, you can trace the route of the Welsh Highland Railway all the way to Caernarfon.

What sets Moel Ddu apart from its grander neighbours is the feeling of space. While everyone's queuing for Snowdon, you'll likely have this summit to yourself. The walk back down through the old oak woods is lovely in autumn, when the leaves turn proper golden.

Camping families staying at nearby sites like Cae Du or Beddgelert Campsite will find this makes an excellent half-day adventure. Pack a flask - the wind up there can be bitter even in summer.
