Moel Hiraddug Cave

The cave entrance sits high on Moel Hiraddug, a limestone hill that commands proper views across the Conwy Valley towards Rhyl. It's not a vast system - more a modest natural chamber that's been inhabited on and off since prehistoric times, which is the real draw here. You're essentially climbing to a spot where Bronze Age people sheltered, where evidence of occupation has been found. The walk up takes twenty minutes or so from the car park, and the path is straightforward enough, though it gets steep near the top.

This is squarely a thing for walkers and history types rather than casual tourists. Kids will manage fine if they're used to a bit of climbing, but there's no dramatic underground world waiting - it's the landscape and the sense of time that rewards the effort. On a clear day the views alone justify the trip. The cave itself is modest, but standing there, looking out across the valley, you get a real sense of why someone chose this spot three thousand years ago.

If you're staying at Golden Sands or one of the other parks near Rhyl, this is easily done as a half-day outing. Admission appears to be free and there are no formal opening hours - it's just there on the hillside. Go early if you can, especially in summer, as the car park fills up. Allow two to three hours total including the walk and a decent sit-down at the top. Worth doing if you're into landscape and archaeology, but don't expect caves the size of Cathedral Cave.
