Moel Y Main

The walk up Moel Y Main from Welshpool is straightforward enough - a decent hill rather than a proper scramble - and the views across the Severn Valley justify the climb. On a clear day you can see right across mid-Wales, which beats staring at your phone in the caravan. It's the sort of peak that rewards you without demanding climbing boots or an early start.

The summit itself is modest. No trig point drama, no café, just grass and sky and the feeling of having earned a proper perspective on the landscape. Walkers will appreciate the relative lack of crowds compared to Snowdonia peaks, though the path gets muddy after rain. It's a decent half-day outing - allow two hours return from the base depending on fitness.

Who should bother? Anyone staying at Valley View Holiday Park or Hidden Valley just down the road will find it a natural leg-stretch that doesn't require a full expedition plan. Families with older kids who can manage a couple of miles on foot will do fine. History types won't find much up there, and if your idea of a walk is a level nature trail, this isn't it.

The real appeal is how it sits within the broader walking country around Welshpool. Pair it with Derwen Mill or Tanat Holiday Park as a base and you've got decent terrain without the tourist crush. Free to access, obviously - it's a Welsh hillside. Go when the weather's decent though; mist here is damp and uninspiring.
