Monk Park Farm

You'll find animals wandering the fields just outside Thirsk - Monk Park Farm is a working zoo where you can get properly close to creatures you'd normally see only behind barriers. It's the sort of place where kids actually learn something without realising it, watching alpacas, deer, and various other livestock up close rather than gawping at them through glass.

The farm setup means you're walking around genuine farmland, not a manicured zoo experience. Expect muddy paths when it's been raining and a real sense of how these animals live day to day. Most visits run between two and three hours - enough time to see everything without fatigue setting in, though families with very young children often leave sooner.

This works brilliantly as a morning or early afternoon stop if you're basing yourselves at one of the nearby parks. The Hideaway at Baxby Manor is closest at under five miles and rates exceptionally well for family holidays. Hillside Caravan Park sits just under five miles away too, making either a sensible home base. It's not a full-day attraction in isolation, but combined with exploring Thirsk itself or heading towards the North York Moors, it slots in nicely to a North Yorkshire break.

Animals and outdoor space appeal to school-age children most - toddlers sometimes find the open fields a bit overwhelming. Go mid-week if you can; weekends draw school groups and the place gets noticeably busier. Worth checking ahead for admission fees and seasonal opening times before you visit.
