Montford Bridge

The River Severn curves through a proper slice of Mid Wales landscape here, and Montford Bridge is where you get close enough to actually feel it. This isn't some manicured visitor attraction - it's a working nature reserve where the water does most of the talking, carving through woodland that changes with the seasons. Otters work these stretches, kingfishers dart between the branches, and if you're lucky you'll spot them without trying too hard.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The paths along the riverbank aren't challenging, but they reward a slow pace and binoculars. Birdwatchers come here specifically, and rightly so - the variety keeps them busy for hours. Families with young kids will manage the easier stretches, though there's not much in the way of facilities or playgrounds, so don't expect entertainment beyond what nature provides.

Access is free, which is a bonus. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the walk properly rather than a quick look. Spring and early summer are best - the bird activity picks up and the woodland's at its freshest. From Shrewsbury it's straightforward to reach, making it an easy addition to a park-based holiday without eating into your day. Royal Hill Caravan Park and Seven Oaks Holiday Home Park are both within easy driving distance, so you could base yourself there and explore the reserve at your own pace. It's the sort of place that improves when you're not rushed.
