Moorby POW Camp

There's not much left to see at Moorby, to be honest. A former prisoner-of-war camp from the Second World War, it's now mostly overgrown fields and scattered foundations - the kind of place that rewards a bit of detective work if you're interested in military history, but won't grab you if you're just after a quick detour from Boston.

What draws people here is the archaeology rather than any dramatic remains. The site itself sprawls across farmland, and you can still make out where the camp's perimeter ran. A few information boards help explain what stood where - the barracks, the admin blocks, the compounds that once held German and Italian prisoners. Walking the ground gives you a genuine sense of scale that photos don't quite manage.

Historybuffs will find this properly interesting. Second World War enthusiasts especially. Families with young kids might struggle though - there's no visitor facility, no cafe, nothing to climb on or press buttons on. It's a thinking place, not a doing place.

Allow an hour if you're keen, less if you're not. It's free to access, though you'll need to find your own way in from the nearest lanes. Spring and early summer are best, when the overgrowth doesn't completely obscure the ground plan.
