Moortown Park

Walking into Moortown Park from Leeds, you're suddenly surrounded by proper Yorkshire countryside - the kind of place that makes you forget the city's just a few miles back. It's a nature reserve, so you get woodland paths, open grassland, and if you're lucky, the birds that locals bang on about. The reserve isn't massive, so you won't be tramping for hours, but it's the sort of spot where a two-hour ramble feels genuinely restorative rather than exhausting.

Families with younger kids will find the paths accessible enough, though it's not a manicured theme park - there are proper puddles and muddy stretches that make it feel like an actual adventure. Birdwatchers and nature photographers will get proper value here. The variety of habitats - trees, scrub, grassland - means different species throughout the seasons, and it's quiet enough that you might actually spot something rather than just hearing rustling.

It's free to access, which is brilliant, and there's no silly gatekeeping about opening hours. Timing-wise, spring and early summer are cracking for wildflowers and nesting birds, though frankly any dry day works. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Glenfield or Moor Lodge are closest - this makes an excellent morning or afternoon break without requiring a drive. It's the sort of place you'd combine with a walk elsewhere rather than make a full day of, but that's rather the point. It's proper local stuff, done well.
