Moota Hill

A steep pull up from Cockermouth, Moota Hill rewards you with proper views across the northern Lake District fells and out towards the Solway Firth. It's not a dramatic peak - you're looking at around 500 metres - but the walk itself is straightforward enough that families with older kids can manage it without too much grief.

The hill sits just outside town, making it ideal if you're staying at Forest Views or Castle Guards Farm Retreat and fancy a morning walk. Allow a couple of hours there and back depending on fitness. The views justify the climb, especially on a clear day when you can pick out the bigger peaks to the south. In poor visibility it's honestly a bit disappointing - just moorland and cloud - so choose your weather wisely.

This isn't a destination in itself. It's the sort of walk you tack onto a Lake District holiday when you want something short, accessible, but with actual reward at the top. Combine it with a wander around Cockermouth itself or a visit to one of the other Skiddaw View area walks if you're after a full day out. Walkers will get more from it than casual visitors. The ascent is regular and tiring rather than technical, so it suits steady plodders more than scrambling types.
