Mordon's Wood

Ancient oaks and beech trees tower overhead as you follow the winding footpaths through this proper old woodland just outside Gloucester. The forest floor crunches underfoot with decades of fallen leaves, and shafts of sunlight filter through the canopy creating those magical dappled patterns that photographers love.

Walkers and dog owners get the most from Mordon's Wood, though it's decent enough for families with older kids who don't mind a bit of uneven ground. The paths aren't buggy-friendly, so leave the pushchair behind. Wildlife spotters should keep their eyes peeled for woodpeckers and the occasional deer, particularly early morning or late afternoon.

Being free to access makes it a lovely addition to a holiday around Gloucester, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Norton Park Lodges or Court Farm Camping. Give yourself an hour for a gentle wander, though serious walkers could easily spend half a day here exploring the various trails. The wood connects to longer footpath networks if you fancy extending the adventure.

It's nothing fancy - no visitor centre or facilities - but sometimes that's exactly what you want. Just proper English woodland doing what it does best.
