Mudstone Hill

The climb up Mudstone Hill from Brixham is short, steep, and absolutely worth doing on a clear day. You're not looking at a mountain - this is Devon, after all - but the effort rewards you with proper views across Torbay and out toward the English Channel. Takes about twenty minutes to reach the top from town, maybe less if you're moving briskly.

What you get here is perspective. On a decent afternoon, you can see across to Torquay and down the coast toward Paignton. The hill itself is covered in scrubland and coastal grass, nothing fancy, but that's part of its charm. No gift shop, no queues, no faffing about. You walk up, you look around, you walk down. It's the sort of place that rewards you for turning up, rather than demanding you stay for three hours to justify the visit.

Families with older kids will find it manageable - the younger ones might need carrying part of the way if they're not keen walkers. It's best visited when the weather's playing ball; a grey, drizzly day rather defeats the purpose. Allow an hour all in if you want to linger at the top and take some photos.

Or slot it in alongside the other coastal walks around Torbay. It's not a destination in itself, but it's the kind of simple, free activity that makes a caravan holiday actually feel like a proper break.
