Muncombe Hill

The walk up Muncombe Hill rewards you with a proper Somerset view - rolling fields that stretch toward Glastonbury's famous Tor on a clear day. It's not a savage climb, more of a steady incline through farmland that takes the best part of an hour depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath.

Walkers will get the most from it. Families with older kids can manage it fine, but there's no facilities at the top and the path can get muddy after rain, so it's not ideal for pushchairs or reluctant toddlers. The summit itself is fairly open moorland - nothing dramatic, just that wide-open Levels view and the satisfaction of having earned it.

Allow a couple of hours round trip if you're taking it steady. Go mid-morning in decent weather and you'll have the place largely to yourself. Winter visits mean shorter days and muddier going, so spring through early autumn is when it really works.

If you're camping at Orchard Farm or Tall Trees just outside Glastonbury, Muncombe slots in perfectly alongside a visit to the Tor itself. It's the kind of walk that feels like real countryside rather than a tourist tick-box - no gift shops, no cafe, just hills and views. Worth the detour if you like a gentle ramble with proper vistas, but don't expect anything remarkable or manicured.
