Murdochcairnie Hill

The walk up Murdochcairnie Hill takes about forty minutes from the car park, and on a clear day the views across Fife are genuinely worth the effort. You're looking out towards the Lomond Hills to the west and across towards the Tay - proper rolling countryside in all directions. It's not a dramatic peak, more of a steady climb through farmland and rough grass, but that's rather the appeal. Walkers will find it a decent leg-stretcher without the scramble or exposure you get on more serious Scottish hills.

The hill sits about three miles south of Cupar, making it an easy stop if you're based at one of the caravan parks around here - Snugs at Logie Farm is closest at just under four miles. You could easily combine it with a stroll around the nearby policies or a visit into Cupar itself for lunch. Families with older kids will get something from it; younger ones might find the walk a bit of a slog without much to see until you reach the top.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit, so bring water and dress for the weather. Best tackled in decent conditions when visibility is good - a foggy day here is genuinely pointless. Free to visit, obviously, being a hill. Allow a couple of hours return if you're not a rapid hiker, and go early in the day if the forecast looks promising. It's the sort of straightforward Fife walk that locals know well but tourists often miss.
