Mynydd Ffoesidoes Nature Reserve

The walk up Mynydd Ffoesidoes takes you properly into the hills above Presteigne, where the landscape opens up in ways that surprise you if you've only driven through mid-Wales before. It's a nature reserve, yes, but calling it that undersells what you actually get - which is moorland, woodland patches, and views that stretch across the Powys valleys. The terrain is rough in places, boggy after rain, so proper boots matter more than the ordnance survey might suggest.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a quick jaunt - allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to see anything properly, longer if you're the type to stop and identify birds or plants. The paths aren't manicured or marked with helpful signs everywhere, which some will love and others will find frustrating. Families with younger kids might find it a bit bleak and windswept; older children who enjoy rambling through actual countryside rather than managed beauty spots will be fine.

Free to access as far as I can tell - there's no visitor centre, no facilities, just the reserve itself. That's rather the point. Spring and early summer are best, when the moorland has some colour and the birds are out. Winter is grey and often muddy.

If you're staying at Hush Hush Glamping or Presteigne Holiday Park, this makes a genuinely good half-day walk without needing to travel far. It's real country, not a tourist version of it. Worth the effort if you like that sort of thing; skip it if you want an easy stroll with a café at the end.
