Mynydd Mawr Woodland Park

The woodland here rises steeply from the Llanelli side, offering proper hill walking rather than a casual stroll. Mynydd Mawr - that's Big Mountain in Welsh, though it's modest by any standard - gives you sweeping views across the Towy Valley and down towards Carmarthenshire's patchwork of fields. You'll find mixed woodland with older trees, the kind of place where you actually notice the season changing. Locals use it regularly for dog walks and trail running, so it's well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, but quiet enough that you can hear yourself think.

The walk takes anything from 45 minutes to two hours depending on which route you fancy and how often you stop. There's no visitor centre or café, so bring your own water. It's free to access, which helps. Families with older kids (eight or nine upwards) will find it manageable; younger ones might struggle with the steeper bits. History buffs won't find much beyond the landscape itself - this is about the walk and the view, not about buildings or interpretations.

If you're staying at Route 47 Glamping just down the road, or one of the caravan parks scattered nearby - River View or Coedhirion Farm aren't far - this makes a proper half-day out. It's the kind of place that works best in decent weather; come here on a grey, drizzly Welsh afternoon and you're paying for the exercise, not the scenery. Worth doing once if you're in the area.
